Fred was at his work desk when his Boss Jim approached him. The Boss was a short little guy, balding, always wearing an old-fashioned bow tie on a high collar, never a conventional tie like most business people, yet he expected his employees to be the norm and wear a suit and tie. Fred set the reports and figures, down upon his desk, glancing up at his boss.

“Jim…?”

“Good day Fred. I’ve been going over your figures and they are way down for the month.”

Fred held his forehead a moment wiping his brow with his hand, as if trying to avoid the comments. He knew the problem was getting worse, and his mind remained a jumble of conflicts in thought between work and Kerry. “I know.”

“You’ve always been one of our top sellers.” Jim turned and glanced out the window at the town of Bakersfield. Then he spun about, a stern look upon his face. “Why the drop in business?”

Fred set the pen on his desk, took a deep breath gazing up at his boss. “I’ve been having some personal problems as of late,” he replied, swallowing hard, then pausing a moment to catch another fresh breath of air.

He knew what was coming; he had expected to be fired from his job. It was as though life were coming apart piece by piece and there was nothing he could do but stand back, watch, and accept the fate that was befalling him.

His iniquities, he could only bore upon his own shoulders, and the sins he had created for himself could be blamed on nobody else. Now his very livelihood was falling apart as well and disintegrating in a slow steady process before his very eyes.

Jim pranced cautiously over to his desk. “Well, un-have them,” he responded in an angry tone. “I have profits to make,” he gestured. “No profits, no business,” he slammed his fist on the edge of Fred’s desk, while Fred glanced up, watching every move, expecting the worst. “It has to be clear to you that your job is slipping away from you.” Jim walked again to the window glancing out at Bakersfield, admiring the traffic, the people on the sidewalks, the old town mom and pop stores down the street.

He turned to Fred. “I’m giving you another chance, but no profits and I’ll have to let you go. Look Fred…” he approached him sitting on Fred’s desktop, making himself comfortable for the moment, glancing down at Fred with a sympathetic eye. “Off the record, is there anything you want to talk about as a friend?”

A moment went by as both gentlemen were eye to eye. Then Fred took a deep breath, and swallowed his pride. “No, I have to solve my own problems myself. It’s about Kerry; I’ve lost her to another man, a black man.”

“I see,” Jim replied, again getting up and glancing out the window at the town. “That is personal.” He turned from his spot. “Well, I feel sorry for you, but you will have to find one of the other fish in the sea.
